Heart and Hands Foundation (HHF) empowers rural Ugandan adults with foundational literacy and numeracy skills, enabling them to navigate daily life, access economic opportunities, and participate actively in their communities. Rooted in the belief that “the entrance of Your words gives light” (Psalm 119:130), this subprogram transforms lives by breaking the chains of illiteracy and fostering lifelong learning.
Overview
In Uganda, where 27% of adults lack basic literacy skills (UNESCO, 2023), HHF’s Adult Literacy Campaigns address a critical gap, particularly among women and marginalized groups. Through community-driven classes, we equip learners with reading, writing, and numeracy skills tailored to their practical needs from understanding medical prescriptions to managing small businesses. This initiative aligns with HHF’s mission of “mindset change”, empowering individuals to see themselves as capable learners and active contributors to their families and society.
Program Structure & Key Activities
1. Mobile Learning Centers
- Accessible Venues: Classes are held in churches, marketplaces, and village halls, ensuring no learner travels more than 3 kilometers.
- Flexible Schedules: Evening sessions accommodate farmers and mothers, with childcare provided for young children.
- Local Instructors: Trained community volunteers teach in native languages (Runyoro-Rutooro) to enhance comprehension.
2. Practical, Life-Skills Curriculum
- Functional Literacy:
- Reading: Decoding bus schedules, medicine labels, and government documents.
- Writing: Filling out forms, composing letters, and recording farm yields.
- Numeracy Essentials:
- Budgeting household expenses and calculating profits from market sales.
- Measuring land plots for farming or construction.
- Digital Basics: Introductions to mobile banking and SMS communication.
3. Faith-Integrated Learning
- Bible Study Groups: Scripture reading sessions double as literacy practice, with learners tracing verses like “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).
- Prayer Circles: Classes open and close with prayers for perseverance and wisdom.
4. Community Partnerships
- Churches: Host classes and recruit learners through Sunday announcements.
- Local Councils: Mobilize village leaders to encourage male participation, reducing stigma around adult education.

Biblical Foundation
HHF’s literacy work embodies Proverbs 4:13: “Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life.” By illuminating minds with knowledge, we honor God’s call to uplift the marginalized and equip His people for service.
